it was 2009 .... and as usual life was very very hectic ...with endless lectures and exam committee work taking on herculean proportions with the NAAC audit .... filing was different and so was everything else .... from among the 34 colleges under the pvt university i was working in...that college was the most conscientious in following rules to the 'T' ....ergo we kept getting additional work from the university Alll the Time :( ...earned the crazy lady, who was the Director, Brownie points and all of us Groaned... when ever some additional work came to this pvt college I was working at :(
the entire year, 95% of us NEVER ate ice creams .....that year was a very tough one with me taking an additional 11, 1and 1/2 hour lectures for students from NTU Singapore ...who were on an exchange prog for an eventual tie up with this pvt univ ... come Mid March ...it was like being released from a self imposed Jail .... there were students who would come to me for help with backlog exams ...but that was manageable compared to 3 lectures a day !!!!! amidst teaching and Syllabus setting for 16 subjects ...for some subjects i was liaising with Prof's from other cities and also getting each syllabus approved by senior Profs in the university .....best part ...i was not the HOD in my subject ....HOWEVER i was doing all this and exam committee work .... the donkey gets the biggest load of course LOL
work was crazy .... ergo i went all out on an Ice Cream Binge of a life time ...
some days i was eating 10 of them ... i started a throat infection ....and i continued to eat icecreams .....then it turned into a fever and i stopped eating ice creams ..... there was no way i could ask for Leave ....no one from the Exam Committee could even dream of leave :( ergo i continued to work with the fever .... third day i got a rash all over, by evening ...in the exam committee, there was a young prof who was carrying and in her 7th month ...so i kept telling her to not be around me ....she was not one bit worried .... i was so scared i had got measles and i was worried for the young lady prof who was carrying ....that evening i had to teach 3, 4th semester students Macro, as all 3 had a backlog and they had to pass their first year backlog paper .... i was worried for those kids too .... when i went home it flared up and now the rash covered my entire body and face :( .....
when i called college the next morning ....i got a reply i expected ....How Can You Ask for Leave ....so off i went to work ....regular exams had started and work was at an all time high .... after some time i started feeling awfull and went to the deputy director's office and showed her my rash ...she was also shocked to see it, as she too thought it was measles .... my hubby came and took me straight to the ENT's clinic ...the doc was very cool about it ...checked me and said it was a throat infection that had reached my ears ergo the rash ....Phew !!! what a relief to know it was not measles .... and for the first time i ate all the medicines prescribed to me ....
it was a thursday that i went home from work ...the stupid college did not let me apply to the university for sick/medical leave ....they put it as normal leave and since friday was a holiday for some reason i forfeited that leave too .....they cut my pay for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and citing some crazy rule cut my pay for Sunday too :( plus i was given work to finish from home too ...syllabus setting of course :/ the most evil, vicious, nasty and sickening work place i have ever seen till date was this pvt college :/ it still is sick ...ppl still keep leaving the college .... somehow the ones who remain are... the lazy, non working ...however ... extremely Adroit at gossip monging and curry flavouring ones ;)
after seeing how much pay they had cut .... the (office superintendent) OS as we called him... was so happy to give me the good news .... his main aim in life was to find ways to cut the pay of the faculty .... he felt we ladies (98% of the full time faculty were women...we were 8 women and 2 men) got a cushy deal .... he would be soooo happy to cut our pay .... that day i officially named him in the faculty room, in front of the others ...i would very sweetly call him Kasayi (Butcher) henceforth ..... everyone agreed that was a very apt name for the Laziest OS in the entire university ...when we faculty complained to the Deputy to change him ....she said ''what to do we are stuck with him'' ..... no one wants this guy ..his reputation as a lazy bum preceded him .... he too would get an X amount for exam work and if i told him to help me get students into class rooms during exams ...he was so ineffective compared to the clerks and us faculty in the exam committee ...for a 6foot 4 person ...he had the weakest voice ...not one of the students would even acknowledge his presence on the floor ....we women had voices that would reverberate... from one end of the corridor to the other end ....
he too got back at me by addressing me as Mr Sheeja in all office circulars LOL ... in each college i worked i would see this tussle between office staff and faculty ...the clerks always felt the faculty got a lot of money for doing very little :(
